Window Tinting Help Needed Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee

hi all, for some strange reason i decided to tint my gal windows myself, thought it cant be that hard what a mare, just trying to do the very rear side windows at the mo already used a roll of film trying different things with it trying to fit it without creasing it, cos of the curve in that window (its a pig)

the only way i can get it crease free is to fit it in 2 sections but then you can see the join slightly, not too bad but not great (creasefree at least) major breakthrough, so the windows are like that at the mo, better than standard, but i aint happy, anyone managed to fit them in 1 piece if so how, i presume a heatgun is the only way

I tried this a few years ago on a car i had and in the end gave up. just cant get rid of the creases and like you say it looks crap if not right I take it you are using lots of soapy solution and a flat scraper sort of thing.

I would say buy a Gal with it fitted, may cost loads but at least youll keep you hair

?? :D The last time I looked, the rear quarter windows were flat....

If using cheap (i.e. thin) film, the only way for the novice is to remove the window glass and do it on a flat table in a room with no draughts. Meticulously clean the glass, spray plenty of soapy water, lay the film on confidently, use a good quality blade to squeeze the water out, then finally trim the edges with a *new* stanley blade or scalpel.

Its a bit like plastering.....either you can or you cant.....

I have thought about doing mine.

Choices,

Leave it as so.

Sell yours and buy a Gal with black windows.

Get some black window tint (cost, hassle of cutting the film JUST right so it fits, then doing it all again 'cause it looks sh!t)

Paying someone else to do the above.

Looking on Ebay for someone selling "ALL" the black windows. With cost/hassle of removing the old ones and fitting the new glass. (This is a mod to your car so the insurance comp might want to know)

My choice? No 1.

(Wish I had bought a Gal with Black windows)

I had my windows tinted at home by a mobile vehicle tinter. I had the day off work at watched with great awe as he stuck on the film. On the rear quarters and rear screen he heated the film with a heat gun and pressed it down firmly with a plastic spatula, amazing as the film moulded itself to the windows. The guy said he tinted a grand voyager an the rear screen was a pig, he overheated the glass and the screen shattered OOPS!.

Hope this is of help

from my knowledge of model airplanes (they have a heat-shrinkable covering) it would make sense to heat the film to get it to "fit" correctly - but i have never used the black window tint film, so i dont know what its like, but may aswel try it.

i would suggest a professional window tinter - cheaper than changing the galaxy, and you get good results - a mate of mine did that, and the results were as good as real tinted glass - before he roofed the car and wrote it off

the front can be tinted - but the % of light that comes through is a lot higher, than whats allowed at the back.

IIRC - the front side windows must let in 95% of light?? not sure though.

I dont think it is but i am willing to take a chance, if i get pulled by the police then it will cost me 25 pounds(per window) to take off. My windows are all the same colour now. Looks better in my opinion.

Have you got a photo please?

actually it will cost you more if they do catch you!

The owner or driver of such a vehicle may be issued with an Immediate Prohibition Notice and immediately

prevented from driving the vehicle on public roads until the tints have been removed and either a Police Officer or Vehicle Inspectorate Officer confirms that the glass has been restored to a compliant condition. It is also possible, depending on the severity of the offence, that the owner may be prosecuted for driving a vehicle in a non-roadworthy or even a dangerous condition with the potential for Penalty Points and a Fine.

Driving such a vehicle on public roads before the tints have been removed and before a Prohibition Notice has been lifted will be a serious offence and the owner or driver is likely to be prosecuted.

The front windows are usually tinted in manufafacture (the markings in the bottom corner would say tinted), this is the legal maximum! Should you have an accident your fault or not, you will be at fault and probably find yourself un-insured. I found this out cos I wanted to put a light tint on the front, I'm sure your insurance co will say the same.

cheers gooner

took me a good day to do

i took the rear qaurter windows indoors to do them, they are a nightmare to do as they are curved and i could not do them in one piece creasing nightmare, so they are in 2 bits does not look to bad, wish i could have done it in one, but without heating it up and all that i think its impossible

the rear door windows were quite easy to do, once the template is made to an exact fit out of thin cardboard, has to be about 1 mm gap all around the window or the film would catch when the window goes up and down, i wasnt going to to try and take them out

then i had a go at the back windscreen which i tried to do in about 4 strips and cut along the heater lines what a mare, so i just cheated and brought a black car roller blind which was a good fit, about an inch short at the bottom sides but it is so dark inside it dont really show, you cant see nothing through the windows from the outside, which is good as it hides my 15" sub nicely <_<

I think you will get more than a 25 pound fine for killing someone, probably a pedestrian.

Which is the most likely outcome while driving with your vision obscured.

Its a bit like the motor bikers you see with the tinted visors driving in the dark, ( fortunately they usually kill themselves ).
